Historic Seventh Inning Lifts the Warriors in a Sweep of Menlo

Kayde Iranon went 3-for-3 with two home runs and seven RBI in just the seventh inning; Jessup put up 17 runs in the bottom of the seventh

LINCOLN, Calif. – Needing a bounce-back performance after a loss on Friday, Jessup got that and a lot more on Saturday as they posted 30 runs on the Menlo Oaks. Highlighted by one of the highest-scoring innings in program history, records were set at McBean Park as the Warriors won their third series in a row.

"I think, for the most part, we are trending in the right direction," said head coach Trevor Paine. "I think there's obviously some areas that if we could clean up, we could potentially sweep some series."

Kayde Iranon's seventh inning will be one to mark in the history books. The sophomore went 3-for-3 with two home runs and seven RBI in the inning alone. Iranon started off the frame with a solo shot. He left the yard again in his third trip to the plate, this time a grand slam.

Iranon ended the day 4-for-5 with a record eight RBI. His seven RBI in the seventh inning would have set a new Jessup single-game record alone.

The seventh inning saw the Warriors put up 17 runs on just eight hits, four of which left the yard. After Iranon's solo shot, Nate Van Patten and Brennan Rozell followed suit as Jessup sent back-to-back-to-back shots out of the ballpark.

On that seventh inning, Paine noted, "For some guys to get three at-bats in an inning is pretty impressive. I had planned on sending three different pitchers out there just, depending on the score in that situation, but we just kept adding and adding. So, it was a really good opportunity to get a lot of guys some ABs. It was a pretty special inning.

In total, the Warriors hit six home runs in the win. Rhys De Highden hit a three-run moonshot in the fifth, and Jaisten Cabatbat homered for the second day in a row, this time being a two-run shot in the sixth.

Charlie Perkins looked to be getting the win in this one as the right-hander allowed four runs over six innings of work. But with a 9-4 lead entering the six, Preston Brook entered in relief, allowing five runs on five hits over 0.2 innings of work.

The win ultimately went to Jason Riviello, his second, as he was the beneficiary of the 17-run inning.

Cabatbat went 4-for-6 in game one, driving in four. Kevin Gutierrez went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Twelve Warriors crossed home plate in this one, nine of which scored multiple times. Seven different Warriors drove in at least one run.

With a three-hour and 54-minute game in the books, the teams returned to the field to wrap up the series with a seven-inning finale.

Jessup needed their starting pitcher Max Moreno to eat up some innings in this one, and the lefty did not disappoint. Moreno tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on three hits with four walks and eight punchouts.

On Moreno's outing, Paine added, "When we put him in the game, we just expect him to eat up innings and go as long as he can. We know with how he's thrown that he gives us a chance, and he seemed to get better as the game went on."

The Warriors struck first as Chris Cook sent the seventh ball out of the yard for Jessup, a two-run shot in the first. A sacrifice fly from Nick Kasparian continued the scoring in the third, giving Jessup a 3-0 lead.

Menlo bounced back in the fourth, driving in three to even the score. But a shutdown inning would be denied on a sac fly from Rozell, giving Jessup the decisive 4-3 lead.

With a 4-for-8 day in the box, Brandon Springer continues to make highlights as he extends his hitting streak to 17 games. Since joining the starting lineup on February 10, Springer is batting .417 with 23 RBI.

The Warriors, now 11-11-1 overall, will continue the season next weekend when they visit Vanguard University in Costa Mesa. The series begins on Friday at 11 a.m.
