Defensive Mishaps Haunt Jessup as Vanguard Sweeps Doubleheader

Jessup allowed 18 runs, seven of them were unearned; Springer’s hitting streak ends at 18 games

COSTA MESA, Calif. – After a high-scoring Saturday a week ago, the Warriors hoped their offense would carry over to the road as they visited No. 15 Vanguard. Jessup struggled to find offense across the doubleheader, and their defense did not do them any favors, as Jessup dropped two to start an eight-game road trip.

The Warriors surrendered 18 runs across Friday's two games, seven of which were unearned. Jessup committed three errors on the day, two of which occurred in the first inning of game one.

Kayde Iranon's two errors led to the Lions plating three runs in the bottom of the first. They would add runs in the second, fourth, and sixth to give Vanguard an insurmountable advantage. Jessup finally found the scoreboard in the fourth on a Chris Lopez single, which saw Brandon Springer score on an error.

Jessup made things interesting in the final stretch as Kevin Gutierrez drove in two with an eighth-inning single. Another run scored in the ninth, but the rally would end with the tying run in the batter's box.

Trevor Arnston gets handed the loss after surrendering six runs (three earned) on four hits over 5.2 innings of work.

A big first inning by the Lions happened once again in game two as Vanguard plated five runs, three of which were unearned. Max Moreno got the start, allowing seven runs (three earned) on eight hits over just three innings.

Lopez added more offense in game two, starting with an RBI single in the first. He later left the yard on a solo shot in the fourth. Jessup would score in the fifth and seventh, but it was not enough, as the Lions took the game 12-5.

A story coming into Friday was Springer, as he entered the day riding a 17-game hitting streak. Springer extended the streak to 18 in game one, but he finished 0-for-3 in game two, bringing his streak to an end.

Jessup falls to 12-13-1 overall with the loss. In conference play, the Warriors sit at 6-7-1.

The series will continue tomorrow with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Game one will be counted towards the conference record, but with the GSAC moving to three-game series this season, the second game will be a non-conference matchup.
