Offensive Woes Plague the Warriors in Four-Game Sweep

Vanguard outscored the Warriors 17-1 on Saturday; The Lions took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game two

COSTA MESA, Calif. – After a series of defensive mishaps hurt the Warriors on Friday, Jessup regrouped and returned to Dean Harvey Field, looking to salvage a split with Vanguard. What took place instead was a dominant showing by the home side, as Jessup was limited to just one run across 16 innings of baseball.

The lone run of the day for the Warriors came off the bat of Dirk Ryan as his solo home run ended Vanguard's bid for a no-hitter six innings into the seven-inning affair. The Warriors managed to get on base four times via a walk in the first six innings, but other than Ryan's blast, nobody cracked the hit column.

Ryan's solo shot would be the only hit for the Warriors in game two. Even so, Jessup managed to load the bases in the seventh, setting up Ryan with a chance to continue the game. But with the tying run in the box, the rally stopped as Vanguard took the game 5-1.

Game two did not count towards the GSAC season, but game one did.

The opener of Saturday's doubleheader was tough sledding for the Warriors as well, magnified by a seven-run fourth inning by the Lions. Charlie Perkins got the starting not and allowed eight runs (two earned) on five hits over five innings of work.

Caleb Markwith and Mason Azevedo pitched the final four innings in relief.

Vanguard limited Jessup to six base hits in the opener. Only Rhys De Highden's double went for extra bases. The Lions pushed out five extra-base hits, two of which left the ballpark as they cruised to a 12-0 win.

The Warriors trotted out five pitchers in game two, with only two holding the Lions to a zero in the run column. Kevin Gutierrez made an appearance on the mound, striking out a pair over two innings of work. Azevedo made his second appearance of the day, tossing a scoreless sixth.

Vanguard started game two by striking out the Warriors in six consecutive at-bats.

The Warriors drop to 12-15-1 overall on the season after being swept in Costa Mesa. In conference play, Jessup sits at 6-8-1.

Jessup will be on the road again next weekend as they visit Westmont College in Santa Barbara. Westmont is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation.

The Warriors will return to McBean Park on April 4 when they host Menlo College in a non-conference game. Tickets are on sale HERE.
