ANGWIN, Calif. – The Warriors wrapped up their short two-match road trip by visiting Pacific Union College on Monday. Looking to end Labor Day on a winning note, a late goal seemed to wrap up a Jessup victory, but their opponents had other ideas as the two sides settled for a 2-2 draw.
Jessup, who suffer their first draw of the season, move to 3-3-1 on the year.
Head coach Greg Lazaga spoke about the environment of Monday's match, adding, "That's a really difficult place to play and it took us awhile to adjust to a different style of play."
Monday's match was an endurance battle for the Warriors as Jessup was competing for the third time over the last week. Jessup started this span with a 2-1 loss to Simpson last Tuesday before a 1-0 loss on the road to Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
Goals were hard to come by early on Monday as the two sides exited the field at halftime with the match scoreless. But there would be no lack of excitement in the final 45 minutes, as each team traded goals, with no lead standing for more than four minutes.
It would be the Pioneers who struck first when Andres Becerra scored to put his side ahead in the 53rd minute. Jessup would not waver, as four minutes later, the match was tied on
Isaac Morfin's first goal of the season, coming off an
Albert Barillas assist.
The next 25 minutes of soccer would see no change to the scoreboard until the Warriors got the goal they needed in the 82nd minute. Set up by a Morfin assist,
Diego Nunez found the back of the net, placing Jessup ahead 2-1 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Now, with PUC on the losing end of the scoreboard, the Pioneers mounted their comeback, and in quick fashion, as it took Jacob Hendricks 28 seconds to score after Nunez's goal, leveling the match at two.
Both sides would get off a shot in the final seven minutes of regulation, but no winning goal would be found as the two teams exit with a draw.
On the ebbs and flows of the match, Lazaga would add, "We were not very efficient in our scoring opportunities and have to do better. We also have to learn how to save the game when we are up. More to do and maturing for our group is needed."
The Warriors went to goalkeeper
Antonio Camacho on Monday. Camacho played all 90 minutes, recording one save in the process.
Now the Warriors get a week to rest, as the next match on their schedule comes on September 13. When the Warriors do return to action, it will be against another Cal Pac team as the Keelhaulers of Cal Maritime come to town.
