ROCKLIN, Calif. – The record book has not been kind to Jessup in their rivalry with Westmont College, but with the two sides renewing this battle as members of the PacWest, it's time to rewrite history. Back from a week in Hawaii, Jessup kept the good vibes going as their best offensive day of the year gave them their first-ever win against Westmont.
Jessup is now 1-11 all-time against Westmont but 1-0 as a member of the PacWest. The two sides were rivals in the GSAC for nine years, with Westmont leaving the NAIA a year before Jessup.
"This was a great win for us on our home field," said head coach
Greg Lazaga. "Our defense has been top for most of the season, and they held it down again today."
Saturday is Jessup's third shutout in their last four matches. Goalkeeper
Maxx Willard finished the day with seven saves, as Westmont fired off eight shots on goal. His backline helped him on the one he didn't save, as it was knocked away at the goal line.
Eduardo Guillen scored his second goal of the season in the 31st minute, placing Jessup on top 1-0.
Luis Cruz played the ball down the sideline to
Isaac Morfin, setting up a cross into the box.
Diego Nunez then deflected it in the box to Guillen who made it back-to-back matches with a goal.
Jessup made it 2-0 three minutes later off the foot of
Jeremy Miller, a strike from 20 yards out that was assisted by
Donovan Carrillo.
The Carrillo to Miller connection was so nice that Jessup decided to go back to it in the second half, as three minutes into the half, Miller connected on his second goal of the day. The two tallies are his first two as a collegiate player.
Nunez added his first goal of the season in the 81st minute, as Guillen repaid the favor with an assist to make it 4-0.
Now 2-3-1 in PacWest play, Jessup sits on seven points, placing them in a tie with Azusa Pacific for sixth in the conference standings. With Jessup still being in their provisional period of NCAA membership, they are ineligible for the postseason.
The Warriors will hit the road next week for matches at Fresno Pacific and Dominican. The season then returns home for the final homestand, beginning on October 30 when Academy of Art comes to Rocklin.
