First-Half Penalty Proves to be the Difference in 1-0 Loss to Menlo

Menlo was awarded a penalty in the first half after contact during a corner kick; Jessup heads to Hawaii next week

ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Warriors played their fourth home match of the season against Menlo College on Thursday and lost 1-0, with the lone goal coming off of a 27th-minute penalty kick.

Oaks junior David Stuber slotted it home, and Menlo was solid in defense the rest of the way. Still, Jessup threatened and outshot their opponents 8-6 with three shots on goal, all in the first half. Diego Nunez, Isaac Morfin, and Eduardo Guillen each had shots on frame for the Warriors.

"We just need to finish goals," Warriors coach Greg Lazaga said. "We had opportunities, good opportunities that we need to finish. I thought we executed in the first half but came up empty while they finished their penalty kick."

The Oaks totaled four shots on target, one each from Stuber, Roy Rosenberg, Parker Faeth, and Andres Maldonado. Jessup's Maxx Willard and Menlo's Martin Fiala both finished with three saves.

There were a total of ten cautions in the match, including an ejection on Menlo's Ryan Branigan for a second yellow. Other Oaks players receiving yellow cards were Johan Mendoza Aguilar, Donald Holiday, and Eder Carrasco. Five Warriors were given yellow cards, including Edgar Vega, Tariq Alabi, Andrew Yang, Guillen, and Luis Cruz

Jessup had its chances in the second half until the final whistle as Nunez headed it just over the crossbar in the 90th minute.

"The second half was a 50-50 game," Lazaga said. "Games are hard-earned at this level, and we are right there. Our boys need to stick with it and keep improving."

The Warriors will hit the road for three matches in Hawaii, starting with Chaminade University on Monday. Their next home match will occur on October 19 against Westmont at 11 a.m.
