WARSAW, Ind. – The 2024 cross country season officially met its end on Friday, as two Warriors were in the field for the NCCAA National Championship. Among the best runners the NCCAA has to offer, Jessup's
Zachary Heberlein and
Cheyenne Ullrich were the two Warriors representing Jessup in Indiana.
Jessup is in its first year of competing in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association), and Friday marked the second national championship for Jessup as a competing member. The first occurred last month when the men's golf program competed in Florida.
Friday's race took place in Warsaw, Indiana, on the campus of Warsaw Community High School. Both Heberlein and Ullrich were individual qualifiers, earning that status by meeting the qualifying standard earlier in the season.
Ullrich posted a new 5k PR in her race, which started at 6 a.m. back in California. Her time of 20:47 earned her a spot in the top 40, placing 38th in a field of 98 runners.
Christy Shank of Campbellsville finished first, giving her the individual national championship. Malone won the team championship, edging out Grace.
Heberlein was one of 91 runners in the men's 8k, and his time of 28:58 earned him a spot in the top 60. It was Heberlein's second career national championship appearance, as he qualified for the 2024 NAIA Track & Field National Championship in the marathon.
Campbellsville claimed the team national championship for Division I men, while Dominic Malel of Campbellsville finished first to give the Tigers a sweep in the individual titles.
Friday brings to an end the 2024 cross country season. Both Heberlein and Ullrich will be back in action in the spring when the track & field season begins.
