LINCOLN, Calif. – After a rain delay and a loss to start the series, the Warriors and Beacons were back out at McBean Park looking to play two more on Saturday. Backed by strong outings from their pitchers and some late-inning heroics, Jessup swept the day to win the series.
Taking the ball to start game one was
Nolan Thebiay. Thebiay looked sharp out of the gates as he sat down the first eight batters he faced before surrendering back-to-back base hits in the third, yielding a Bushnell run.
The third-inning tally was all Thebiay would surrender as he picked up his second win of the season following 4.2 innings of work with five punchouts.
Jessup struck first for the first time this season thanks to a Bushnell throwing error in the first. After the Beacons evened things in the third, Jessup got the run back, and then some as an RBI double from
Trey Furrey sparked a three-run rally that also saw RBI singles from Conner Culp and
Kayde Iranon.
Furrey later added another RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
Head coach
Trevor Paine went to
Xavier Maldonado first out of the bullpen, as the freshman delivered 0.2 innings of work. Hailama Swartman tossed the final 1.2 innings, earning his first save with the Warriors.
On to the rubber game of the series, and it was an eerily familiar start to Friday's action as Bushnell's leadoff hitter Ethan Stacy put his side on top with a leadoff home run. Two more would score in the first off a two-run single, putting the Warriors into an early hole.
Right-hander
Trevor Arnston got the start in the finale, and he settled down after the first inning as he went 3.2 innings, allowing the three runs on four hits with five punchouts.
Ryan Stone entered in relief to strike out four across 3.1 hitless innings.
Jessup's pitching staff combined for 15 strikeouts on Saturday, 31 for the series.
The Warriors got on the board in the last of the first thanks to a two-run double from
Drew Andrews, but they remained in a 3-2 hole for the next five innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, Paine went to
James Williams III off the bench to get the righty-lefty matchup. Williams delivered in a big spot as his monstrous three-run homer put the Warriors on top for good. Furrey added to the rally with an RBI single to make it 6-3.
Jessup is now 6-1 to start the season and are winners of two straight series. They will be home again next weekend as Corban comes to town for the final four games before GSAC baseball begins.
