SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Warriors bounced back from Friday's series-opening defeat, as Jessup swept their doubleheader with The Master's on Saturday. Jessup piled on 22 runs on the day as the double-dose of victory earned the Warriors their eighth series win of the season.
Jessup, winners of eight of the nine series they have played, are now 25-5 on the season. The Warriors are 11-4 in GSAC action.
Highlighting the day was the bat of
Trey Furrey, as the senior racked up five hits on the day, adding two home runs and five RBI. Furrey, in his first season with the Warriors, pushed his home run count to 13 which leads the GSAC. His .490 batting average is also tops in the conference.
Furrey hit his first home run of the day in the eighth inning of game one, a solo shot that put the Warriors on top 6-5. Jessup ended up winning the game 7-5 after a wild pitch allowed an insurance run to score.
Jessup also got a game-one home run via
Drew Andrews, whose two-run shot had the Warriors leading 5-4 in the fourth.
Right-hander
Jason Riviello earned the victory in game one after two innings of relief work.
Joey Miller then held the lead with a scoreless eighth, setting up
Kevin Gutierrez to slam the door shut with a scoreless ninth inning, earning him his second save of the year.
With the series now tied, it was on to the rubber game as head coach
Trevor Paine looked to left-hander
Max Moreno to win the series.
Moreno responded with five innings of work, during which he allowed just two runs on three hits. The strikeout pitch was again working for the veteran lefty as Moreno punched out six Mustangs. Moreno's 36 strikeouts lead the Warriors this season, as he has one more than Saturday's game-one starter,
Anthony Perez.
The Warriors got on the board first in game two as
Quinton Hall hit a two-run opposite-field home run to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
Connor Culp then added to the scoring with a solo shot in the fourth, giving him 12 on the season that at the time matched Furrey for the team lead.
Culp's tie with Furrey lasted just an inning, as Furrey left the yard for the second time with his two-run blast in the fifth, giving the Warriors a 6-0 advantage.
Jessup added to their lead in the sixth as a Furrey RBI single, a wild pitch, a bases-loaded walk, and two hit batsmen allowed five runs to score. Jessup tacked on four more in the ninth, as they won the series finale, 15-7.
The Warriors will stay on the road this week as they are scheduled to visit Simpson on Tuesday for two non-conference games. Jessup will then visit Menlo for a non-conference contest on Friday before the series makes its way to McBean Park for two games on Saturday.
