SONOMA, Calif. – Opening day of the 2025 Jessup Baseball season saw the Warriors hit the road for Sonoma County on Friday, as the Warriors took on the Sea Wolves of Sonoma State. With soggy field conditions to combat, the Warriors made the most of the day, as they produced on both offense and defense, leading to a 6-2 victory.
The Warriors, now 1-0, will get a second look at the Sea Wolves tomorrow when Sonoma makes their way to McBean Park for a noon doubleheader.
Earning the opening day nod was right-hander
Hailama Swartman. After his first three pitches resulted in two SSU hits and a run, Swartman settled down to allow one earned run (two runs total) on three hits across 4.1 frames.
"I thought Hailama was really good," said head coach
Trevor Paine. "They came out really aggressive, swinging at the first couple of pitches. He did a good job of minimizing the inning. Things could have snowballed, but he executed his pitches, got a double play ball, and we got out of there giving up just the one."
When Paine went to the bullpen, he turned to left-hander
Tyler Lamperti, who made his Jessup debut on Friday. Lamperti was the only relief arm the Warriors needed, as he tossed 4.2 innings out of the bullpen in which he allowed no hits.
On offense, Jessup put three balls over the fence, the first coming off the bat of
Dominic Ott. Ott's solo shot made it a 2-2 game in the fifth inning.
Jessup would take a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning on their second home run of the day, a solo blast to center by
Bryce Petrilla. However, with the wet conditions, Petrilla's foot got caught in the dirt, sending him to the ground in pain. Unable to run the bases,
Cole Hazel entered the game to play the remaining three innings at first base.
The final blast came in the ninth inning when
Kayde Iranon launched a three-run shot to left, giving the Warriors some needed insurance runs.
"They always continue to find at-bats," added Paine on his team's ability to fight. "We always preach that it's not always going to be pretty. We're not always going to be able to score a bunch of runs, but if you continue to keep putting pressure on and put yourself in a position to score runs, then you get the big swing and the knockout blow."
The Warriors and Sea Wolves will be back in action tomorrow when the series makes its way to McBean Park in Lincoln. To give the field more time to dry, first pitch has been pushed back an hour to noon.
