SEASIDE, Calif. – The Warriors are on a break from PacWest baseball, as a trip to the beaches of Monterey popped up on the schedule this weekend. In game one of a two-game series with CSU Monterey Bay, Jessup managed just one run as the host Sea Otters took the contest.
Jessup now sits 15-5 on the season.
Friday's meeting with CSUMB was just the second series away from the PacWest for Jessup this season. The Warriors swept Sonoma State, a conference foe of the Sea Otters, to open up the year.
Jessup pushed across just one run in the loss, that being a solo home run from
Tony Otis in the top of the second. Otis' blast was the Warriors' first hit of the day, and it would be Jessup's only hit until the fifth inning when
Rudy Rodriguez singled through the right side.
The next batter after Rodriguez's single was Otis, and he responded with his second hit of the day, this one a double. But instead of the Warriors scoring or putting runners in scoring position, the play ended with both Otis and Rodriguez being tagged out between third base and home.
Monterey Bay made the Warriors pay for the base running snafu with two runs in the sixth.
Jessup managed five hits on the day, with
Cody Antone and
Nick Poss being the additional two Warriors to find the hit column. For Antone, the reigning PacWest Player of the Week, his eighth-inning single extends his hitting streak to eight games.
Head coach
Trevor Paine used Friday as an opportunity to see multiple pitchers. Right-hander
Hailama Swartman allowed one unearned run on one hit in his two innings of work. Paine then went to
Diego Chavez, who surrendered one run (earned) on two hits across three innings. Chavez was tabbed with the loss.
Lefty
Tyler Moore tossed an inning in relief, but his outing was put on pause midway through after rain caused a 40-minute delay. Moore ultimately allowed two runs in his frame as the wet conditions produced two wild pitches.
Jake Morell was the final Jessup pitcher to see the mound, and in his two frames, Morel achieved one of the rarest feats in baseball. Morell logged an immaculate inning in the seventh as he struck out the side on nine pitches. He added a fourth strike out in the eighth.
The Warriors and Sea Otters will return to the diamond on Saturday for a single game scheduled for noon. Jessup returns to PacWest action next weekend, with Hawaii Pacific coming to McBean Park.
