SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Warriors returned to Sacramento on Wednesday with brooms in hand, looking to pull off the sweep of Hawaii Hilo. The visiting Vulcans had other plans as a six-run sixth inning secured Hilo their first week of the week as they leave with a 10-5 final.
Jessup is now 10-5 in PacWest action, with Wednesday bringing to an end the Warriors' nine-game conference win streak.
Hilo got on the board first with two runs in the third inning, and then the Warriors countered with two of their own in the bottom half when
Sarah Giles launched her ninth home run of the season over the right-centerfield wall. The inning continued with
Reagann Hoblit driving in a run with a gapper into center field.
The Vulcans leveled the score in the fourth, but back came Jessup with a run in the bottom half off a throwing error.
Jessup's lead was held until the sixth, when Hilo pieced together their best inning of the week. Six runs came home, with the big blow being a grand slam. Hilo would add a run in the seventh, and while the Warriors did rally to load the bases in the final inning, an RBI single from Giles would be the only offense in the comeback bid.
Alexandria Himes is tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 5-7.
Jazlyn Villavicencio tossed 2.1 innings before head coach
Brie Campbell turned to Himes.
Bella MacFarlane logged 1.1 innings in relief.
Jessup will get a break from softball for a week as their next scheduled contest will be a doubleheader against Western Oregon on March 25.
