Jessup Pushes Across 21 in Game One to Highlight Doubleheader Sweep

The Warriors batted around in back-to-back innings during game one; Chavez’s five-inning gem led Jessup to a game two victory

LINCOLN, Calif. – It has been a week of records and milestones at McBean Stadium as the longest game in Jessup history took place on Friday, and just four days later, the Warriors scored their most runs of the season in a 21-6 win over Chaminade on Tuesday. In taking two games on Tuesday, the Warriors have captured the series against the visiting Silverswords.

The 21 runs scored is the most that Jessup has scored at McBean since February 23 last season against Menlo. Jessup would proceed to win game three of the series 3-2.

Jessup was able to empty their dugout in the first game of the doubleheader, as 15 different players had a plate appearance. Senior Jack Grant had the hottest bat for Jessup, going four for four with five RBIs, including a three-RBI double in the first. Cody Antone went two for four with a three-run bomb in the fourth, while Michael Lavinge was three for four with a two-run single in the third.

Antone extended his home run streak to three consecutive games.

The Warriors batted through the lineup in both the third and fourth innings, scoring seven and nine runs, respectively. Junior Koby Williams, who entered as a defensive replacement in the fourth, shot one over the fence on the first pitch he saw for a three-run fourth-inning homer.

Hailama Swartman earned the win, striking out four batters without allowing an earned run in four innings, while junior Riley Houghtby made his season debut, striking out one to close out the game in the final 0.2 innings. Gavin Guard, Chris Albee, and Ryan Irvine all saw time on the mound as well.

The second game of the day featured many fewer runs than the first, with only five combined in the contest. The Warriors got off to a hot start yet again, with two in the first coming off of a double by Nick Poss. Jessup added to their total in the second with a leadoff home run by Dominic Ott.

Junior Diego Chavez earned his fourth win on the year with four strikeouts and just one earned run in five innings of work. Chaminade got on the board with an RBI single by Jake Harper in the third and added a run off a Trysten Mooney sac fly in the fifth. Nolan Thebiay totaled his fourth save of the season for Jessup, striking out three in the final inning.

Jessup improves to 20-8 on the season and 17-6 in the PacWest Conference. The Warriors will go for the sweep in the fourth and final game of the series tomorrow at McBean Stadium at 5 p.m.
