KANSAS CITY, Mo. – There was little to dislike out of the performance from the Warriors on Saturday, as a 15-2 rout of Campbellsville kicked off the NCCAA World Series. Backed by two six-run innings, the Jessup offense did more than enough to help their starter, who had a performance to remember in his own right.
Right-hander
Hailama Swartman received the ball for game one, and early on, it looked like the Tigers had his number as they tacked on two runs across three hits in the opening frame. Campbellsville's three hits came from the first three batters of the game, but from that point on, that would be all they would get against Swartman.
Swartman did not allow a hit for the remainder of his outing which consisted of six innings on the hill. He walked only one batter and struck out seven.
Nolan Thebiay struck out the side in the seventh to cap off a run-rule ending.
Jessup got the bats going in the third with
Cody Antone putting Jessup on the board with an RBI single.
Nick Poss continued the rally with a two-run triple, and he later scored off a wild pitch. An error brought home Jessup's fifth run of the inning and continued the frame, allowing
Cole Anderson to single down the left field line to plate the sixth run.
Antone added another RBI in the fourth when his double scored
Drew Andrews. Andrews reached base on a triple.
There was no relent in Jessup's offense as the fifth inning produced another six-spot. The Warriors racked up six hits in the inning with
Jack Grant, Andrews, Antone, and Poss driving in the runs.
Two more scored in the sixth as Antone and Poss added to their big days.
Both Antone and Poss went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored in the win. Andrews finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored. The Warriors tallied 15 hits in the win.
The Warriors were not only aggressive at the plate, but on the base path as well. Jessup swiped four bags in the win, pushing them to 93 for the season. That sets a new single-season record for the second year in a row.
Jessup will wait to see who their next opponent is as they will take on the winner of the Oakland City-Kansas Christian game, which is currently being played. That game will be on Monday at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
All games will be streamed live on the NCCAA Network.
