ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The Jessup University men's and women's tennis teams hit the courts at Johnson Ranch Sports Club on Friday, taking on longtime rival Menlo College in a conference clash. Both squads fell to the Oaks, 7-0.
For the men, the action kicked off with tightly contested doubles play. At the No. 1 flight, the duo of Joren Stevens and Mario Curiel were engaged in a back-and-forth battle, with the match left unfinished in a hard-fought 5-5 match. Menlo was able to secure the opening doubles point, however, with victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Lucas Pham and Vadim Francois dropped their set 6-2, while Leo Pham and Tanner Sitanggang were edged out 6-4.
Moving into singles play, the Oaks carried their momentum forward to sweep the flights. Stevens competed in the No. 1 spot, falling 6-2, 6-2. Lucas Pham found a better rhythm in his second set at No. 2 singles but dropped the match 6-0, 6-4. Curiel and Leo Pham also showed resilience in the middle of the lineup; Curiel surrendered competitive sets in a 6-3, 6-4 defeat, while Leo Pham fell 6-3, 6-3. Caleb Poling, competing at No. 5, rallied late in his matchup before a 6-1, 6-4 defeat, and Francois rounded out the lineup at No. 6, falling 6-2, 6-0.
On the women's side, the Warriors (0-3) faced an uphill battle as they continued to navigate a rigorous early-season slate. The Oaks took control early in doubles, securing the point with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles over Jessup's Rylie Maloney and Maria Antonella Cardenas, and a 5-0 win at No. 1 doubles against Briana Smith and Giselli Reschke. The No. 3 doubles flight was awarded to Menlo by forfeit.
In singles action, Brianna Smith competed at the No. 1 flight, putting up a solid fight in the second set before falling to Menlo 6-0, 6-3. At No. 2, Giselli Reschke grabbed some early games but was defeated by Gloria Jovic 6-3, 6-1. Rylie Maloney competed at No. 3 singles and was defeated 6-1, 6-0. Rounding out the lineup on the court were Danielle Akabane at No. 4 and Maria Antonella Cardenas at No. 5, who fell 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively. The No. 6 singles point was awarded to the Oaks via forfeit.
The Warriors will look to bounce back and capture their first victories of the 2026 campaign as the season rolls on. Both the men's and women's squads will face Fresno Pacific on Saturday, February 21st at home.
