Warriors Drop Conference Meeting in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Jessup University men's and women's tennis teams hit the courts at Abbott Tennis Courts on Tuesday in a road matchup against Westmont College. Despite resilient efforts both squads fell to the host team. The men dropped their match 6-1, while the women's team faced a 7-0 defeat.

For the men (0-3), the day kicked off with a strong showing in doubles play at the No. 1 flight. The duo of Joren Stevens and Mario Curiel showcased excellent chemistry, battling to take down in a 6-4 victory. However, Westmont managed to secure the opening doubles point by claiming victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots.

Moving into singles action, the Warriors saw flashes of brilliance and several tightly contested matchups. The highlight of the afternoon came at the No. 6 singles spot, where Leo Pham engaged in a thrilling marathon. After taking the first set 7-5, Pham dropped the second 6-4 but rallied back in the deciding third-set tiebreaker to edge out his opponent 10-4, putting a point on the board for Jessup. Lucas Pham also pushed his opponent to the absolute limit at No. 4 singles, battling back to win a shutout second set before narrowly falling in a grueling three-set battle (6-2, 0-6, 7-5).

At the top of the lineup, Joren Stevens competed at No. 1, falling 6-3, 6-3, while Vadim Francois dropped his No. 2 singles matchup 6-4, 6-1. Mario Curiel stayed within striking distance in his opening frame at No. 3 before suffering a 7-5, 6-1 defeat, and Tanner Sitanggang rounded out the lineup at No. 5, falling 6-2, 6-3.

On the women's side, the Warriors (0-6) faced an uphill battle while dealing with a short roster, resulting in a forfeit at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. In doubles play, the No. 1 pair of Briana Smith and Giselli Reschke fell 6-0 to Westmont's top duo, while Rylie Maloney and Danielle Akabane were defeated 6-1 at No. 2.

In singles play, Giselli Reschke provided the most resistance for the Warriors at the No. 2 position. Reschke pushed Sabina Salva to the brink in a highly competitive opening set, eventually dropping the tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. At the No. 1 flight, Briana Smith battled but was defeated 6-0, 6-1. Danielle Akabane (No. 3), Rylie Maloney (No. 4), and Maria Antonella Cardenas (No. 5) rounded out the lineup on the court, ultimately falling in straight sets to the Westmont squad.
