Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Warriors Fall to Sunbirds in Conference Matches

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Jessup men's and women's tennis teams returned to the courts to host Fresno Pacific University. The women's side fell 7-0 while the men's dropped their matchup, 5-2.

Facing a PacWest opponent, the Warriors saw flashes of brilliance, particularly on the men's side in both singles and doubles play, though the Sunbirds eventually took the day in both matchups.

The Jessup men (0-2) put up a gritty performance against Fresno Pacific, ultimately falling 5-2. The highlight of the day came early in doubles action at the No. 1 position. Joren Stevens and Mario Curiel showcased excellent chemistry, battling through a tight set to take down FPU with a 7-5 victory. Despite the win at the top, the Sunbirds managed to secure the doubles point by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 matches.

Moving into singles, Mario Curiel continued his dominant form. Playing at the No. 3 spot, Curiel dismantled his Sunbird opponent in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-1 to put a point on the board for the Warriors.

At the No. 1 singles spot, Joren Stevens engaged in a marathon match against FPU. After a grueling first set that Stevens took in a tiebreaker (7-6 [8-6]), the Sunbird battled back to take the second 6-0. The match went to a deciding third set, where Joren narrowly edged out Stevens 3-1 in the tiebreak. Tanner Sitanggang also pushed his opponent to the limit at No. 5 singles, falling just short in a competitive 6-3, 7-5 match.

On the women's side, the Warriors (0-4) faced a formidable Fresno Pacific squad that moved to 3-0 on the season. The Sunbirds swept the match 7-0, but the Warriors showed resilience across several flights. In doubles play, the No. 1 duo of Briana Smith and Giselli Reschke fought hard before falling 6-2 to FPU.

Singles play saw Giselli Reschke and Danielle Akabane provide the most resistance. At No. 2 singles, Reschke pushed her opponent in the opening frame before falling 6-4, 6-2. Akabane also stayed within striking distance in her first set at No. 4 singles, eventually dropping a 6-4, 6-0 decision.

The Warriors will look to build on these individual performances as they continue their 2026 campaign. In their next appearance, men's tennis will continue their conference schedule as they visit Westmont College on March 3rd. Women's tennis will play a non-conference matchup at University of the Pacific on February 27th.
