TURLOCK, Calif. - The Warriors are competing in their final event of the spring season outside of postseason play at the 51st Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at Turlock Country Club.
The event is hosting a stacked West Coast field, including 10 out of 11 California schools. With recent rain passing through Northern California, a consistent 10 to 15-mph breeze affected field conditions and scoring, making them heavier than in previous years.
For the Warriors this week, the team was looking to continue their stellar performance after being named the PacWest Team of the Week, following a runner-up finish at the Dominican Invitational in Sonoma. The first round at Turlock Country Club did exactly that with the Warriors posting a six-over-par team score to be in 2nd place. Jacobus Brakkee, the reigning PacWest Player of the Week, led the first round charge with a three-under-par 69. Junior Braden Armstrong shot a one-over-par 72, and Nick Chavirin posted a three-over-par 74, followed by Senior Jerah Venkaiya posting five-over-par 76.
The second round for the Warriors saw consistent play, falling into fifth place, shooting six-over-par, once again. Venkaiya continued his steady play, posting another five-over-par 76. However, two Individual Warriors found red figures in the second round, climbing the leaderboard. Sophomore Paolo Castaneda posted a two-under-par 69, bouncing back from a first-round 81. Junior Braden Armstrong stole the show. After his previous mention one-over-par 72, Armstrong found form, making 5 birdies en route to a three-under-par 69. Armstrong is currently tied for first place with Kamron Hopson and Tyler Price, both of CSU San Bernardino. Playing as an individual, Senior Daniel Johnson is tied for 34, with Paolo Castenda, at a seven-over-par total.
Coach Seth Heppner had this to say about his team's performance, "It was a tough but fun day out there today. Proud of the way the team hung in there. Braden avoided the big mistakes and made some key ups and downs, putting him in first place. Fun to see the boys playing well as we head into the end of the season."
With the team in Fifth place, Armstrong Tied for First, and freshman Jacobus Brakkee in 16th place at four-over-par for two rounds, the Warriors look to build off today for tomorrow's final round.Â
