LA MIRADA, Calif. — Postseason play kicked off for the Warriors in La Mirada, California, marking their first season eligible for the PacWest playoffs since completing the NCAA transition. Jessup took on Concordia University Irvine, unfortunately falling 6-2 in the tournament opener.
After clinching a spot in the postseason, Jessup entered as the No. 4 seed, as only the top four finishers in the conference qualify for the tournament. Joining the Warriors in the double-elimination bracket are top-seeded Concordia University Irvine, No. 2 Biola University, and No. 3 University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Jessup opened its first-ever PacWest tournament appearance against the top-seeded Golden Eagles, who got off to a hot start. CUI scored four runs in the opening two innings to jump out to an early 4-0 lead.
The Warriors scratched a run back in the bottom of the third. Maddy Ybarra singled to right field, then tore up the base paths by stealing second and third. She eventually scored on a defensive overthrow by the Golden Eagles to make it 4-1.
Maliyah Lawson sparked momentum in the Warrior dugout in the top of the fifth inning with a rip down the right field line for a leadoff triple. Ybarra then brought Lawson home with a sacrifice fly to center, cutting the CUI lead to 4-2.
Unfortunately, Concordia continued to rally, adding insurance runs to bring the final score to 6-2 and handing the Warriors a loss on day one.
Jessup will return to action tomorrow in a "do-or-die" matchup at 2:00 PM, facing Hawaii Hilo in the elimination bracket.
