ROCKLIN, Calif. - A hard-fought season of Jessup Men's Soccer took place in 2025, their second in the Division II era of Jessup Athletics. Despite a turbulent PacWest campaign, strong leadership and gritty play produced several highlights the team will look to build on.
?
Jessup, led by 10th-year head coach
Greg Lazaga, finished their 2025 campaign with a record of 2-11-4, with both wins being against non-conference opponents. Their PacWest Conference record sat at 0-9-1 as the final whistle of the season blew.
?
The season began positively, with the Warriors drawing their opening match of the year at Cal Poly Humboldt, 0-0, before booking a home-opener win against Simpson, 1-0, and beginning their season with a 1-0-1 record. To round out their non-conference schedule, the Warriors would face off against Menlo College (non-conference match), CSU Monterey Bay, and UC Merced. The first two matches would be hard-fought bouts that ended in one-point losses, as Jessup would drop a 4-3 match at Menlo, and a 1-0 match at home to Monterey Bay. Their two-game skid would break with a 1-1 draw in Merced at Bobcat Field, but as PacWest play began, the Warriors would find themselves in a very rough stretch of games.
?
From the middle of September to the beginning of October, the Warriors would compete in their first five games of the PacWest schedule, of which they would drop all five. On October 7, after a 2-0 loss in Irvine to Concordia, the Warriors sat at 0-5 in the PacWest and 1-7-2 overall. Despite the season looking grim, a positive stretch of games would renew hope and optimism for the back end of the schedule.?
?
This four-game stretch would begin in Fresno for a non-conference match against PacWest opponent Fresno Pacific. That game would end in a 3-3 draw, breaking the Warriors out of their five-game skid against a team that would end up qualifying for the PacWest Tournament as the #4 seed. After that would come a home loss to Dominican in a game where Jessup would lose 4-2. Despite the loss, a positive fact from this game was that the Warriors would score their second-most goals in a game all season, continuing the upward trend in their performance. The homestand continued on October 24 when the Warriors would welcome Fresno Pacific for their PacWest matchup, with that game ending in a 2-2 draw, leaving their season series against the postseason qualifier at 0-0-2. The cherry on top of this four-game stretch came on October 29, when the Warriors would defeat UC Santa Cruz 1-0 on their home field, their first victory in 11 matches.
?
After that stretch, the final moments of the season would begin, starting with Senior Day for the 2025 season. The final game at Warrior Field would take place on November 1 in a match against Chaminade. The team would honor seniors
Alonso Ruiz,
Chase Beals,
Shea Gomberg,
Albert Barillas,
Luis Cruz,
Angelo Chavez, Zay Hernandez, and Jose Eligio Gutierrez before the match as part of the senior day ceremonies. "Honored to see 9 seniors this year graduate! Thankful for all they put in over the years and excited to see them move on to the next stage of life as God provides", said coach
Greg Lazaga about his senior class.
?
The final three games of the 2025 season were not ones to remember, as the Warriors would drop contests to Chaminade, Point Loma, and Azusa Pacific. Despite the rough finish and turbulent season, there were a number of standout athletes on the Jessup roster who would shine throughout the season.
?
Leading the charge on offense for the Warriors was senior
Luis Cruz, who contributed a team-leading seven points, as well as a team-leading three goals. Not far behind with six points on the year was a trio of Jordee Magaña, who also had three goals on the year,
Mateo Barth, and
Aidan Vangelatos. Leading the team in minutes by over 300 was
Chase Beals, with an impressive 1,453 minutes played across 17 matches.
?
The team's strong four-game stretch late in the year, as well as some strong non-conference performances, signal brighter days ahead for the program. "It was a learning and growing year for us on the field as we adapted to the PacWest", said Coach Lazaga as he looks back on the season. "We are excited to put in the work and have our eye on making the conference tournament as we rebuild."
