ROCKLIN, Calif. - It appeared the Jessup men's soccer team may have managed a result on Tuesday at home against Dominican. Despite trailing 2-0 in the second half, the Warriors got one back with a goal by
Kamden Sims in the 79th minute. Instead of the momentum staying in Jessup's favor, the pendulum swung right back the other way as the Penguins scored three goals in the final eight minutes to win 5-1, their first victory of the season.
Dominican got on the board in the first half with a finish by Griffin Brophy off of an assist by Andrew Cudden in the 26th minute. Jessup mustered just three shots in the first half compared to eight by the Penguins. The barrage continued in the second half with the Penguins increasing their lead with a goal by Anthony Stainer.
Jessup did much more on the attacking front in the second half with nine shots, three from
Alessandro Velazquez and two from
Brian Ramirez. Seven players had shots on goal for the Warriors including: Velazquez, Ramirez,
Hamzah Gaphoor,
Brandon Acevedo,
Hector Huerta,
Jesus Rios, and
Kamden Sims. Warriors goalkeeper
Curtis Lynch made three saves compared to Domincan goalie Colin Nestor with six saves.
Jake Kazlauskas scored two insurance goals for the Penguins in the 83rd and 89th minute while Adrian Garcia put the icing on the cake in the 90th minute with an assist from Kazlauskas. Abidan Abraham had an assist on Kazlauskas' first goal. The Penguins had eight shots on target, two each from Kazlauskas, Garcia and Stainer, and one each from Brophy and Nathan Freitas.
Despite a combined 17 fouls between the two teams, there were no cautions in the contest.
Head coach
Greg Lazaga commented after the game, "We just didn't bring the energy in our play until too late. Conference play is just around the corner so we will choose look forward and choose to grow."
He went on to say, "Confidence is a big thing and we will find it over the next week and a half. I think we are better than our outcome today, and now we need to prove it together."
The Warriors will hit the road on Oct. 3 to start PacWest Conference action against Westmont College and will return home to face Point Loma Nazarene University on Oct. 8.
