KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The Warriors teed off the fall season at the beautiful Running Y Golf Course for the annual Oregon Tech Invite facing many familiar foes from last season. The Owls ran away with the tournament this year with a 20-under par finish, followed by Corban University in second place (E) and your William Jessup Warriors bringing home the bronze (+22).
"I'm really proud of our guys and the way they came through in their first tournament," head coach
Tim Hovancsek said. "Congratulations to host school Oregon Tech as they took their home course knowledge and experience to lap the field and second place Corban University by 20 strokes with a record breaking 20 under par 844."Â
Last season the Warriors won the Invite shooting 25-over par and this year with an all new line-up, Jessup shot an impressive three strokes under last year's score. Â
The Warriors were led by sophomore
Hunter Newlin who shot an impressive 5-under par for a final round score of 67 and an ending 217, finishing tied for fifth overall. This is Newlin's second year competing in the Oregon Tech Invite with two top-10 finishes. Last season he finished tied for 8th at 8-over par finishing second behind
Johnnie Greco.
"Hunter played really solid golf and I'm so proud of him for all the hard work he put in this summer," stated Hovancsek, "It has paid off. A little superstitious about numbers, I'm glad I took cart number 67!"Â
Also finishing among the top-15 was sophomore
Dominic Salomone concluding with 73-74-74 -221, plus 5 total. Salomone improved tremendously from last season where he finished with a final +12 for 16th place in his first collegiate Invite.Â
Hovancsek commented, "I am really proud of his mind set and his work ethic as he splits practice time between both golf and music (he plays bass in the orchestra and jazz band)."
Coming in third under the Warriors was Hungarian
Oliver Csanyi who struggled out the gate but shot only one-over par in the final 36 holes to finish in 27th place.Â
Closing out the final two spots was dynamic freshman duo in
Tyus Goring and
Jacob Custodio, Custodio finishing with a total 228 (+12) and Goring competing in his first collegiate match with a 240.
"Not knowing what to expect out of our young line up, all underclassmen, I was very proud how we came together under all the adversity to finish a very solid third place finish of 11 teams," Hovancsek concluded.
Up next the Warriors will travel to the Sonoma State Fall Invitational on Sept. 19th to compete at the Fountain Grove Golf Club.
