SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Traveling to what would be their closest Invitational of the year, the men's golf program competed at the Sonoma State Invite on the beautiful course of Fountaingrove Golf Club in Santa Rosa. Competing day one with a rough 36 rounds under unfamiliar green conditions, the Warriors battled back shooting their best round the final day of competition finishing 10th overall against NCAA and NAIA competition.
"Conducting our Sunday practice round on softer and slower greens, it took the opening 18 holes trying to figure out the speed of the rock-hard greens," head coach
Tim Hovancsek said. "While we came out scoring not our best opening round, the guys fought hard in round two shaving 14 shots off our opening total."
After the first day of play, returner
Hunter Newlin led the Warriors shooting an 81-73 followed by
Oliver Csanyi with a steady 78-78.
The final round for the Warriors would prove to be their best as they familiarized themselves the previous two days on how to grind through the wind and tricky greens.
Consistency brought success for newcomer Csanyi who finished his final round with another 78 for a total 234 (+18) to lead the Warriors 20th overall. Close behind was Newlin (81-73-84) and transfer from San Joaquin Delta College
Matt Stewart, competing in his first tournament for Jessup with a low 74 in the final round to finish 240 (+24).
Dominic Salomone completed his third round with a 75 to aid in the team's lowest round total, closing out at 311 and final competitor for Jessup
Jacob Custodio powered through the 54 holes of golf with a touch of the flu.
The overall scoring average for the tournament was an 80.53 on a par 72 course with the Warriors less than 10 strokes behind a top 5 finish. Up next the men will travel to the Coastal Collegiate Classic hosted by Corban University in Salem, Ore. on October 9-10.
