Hovancsek Announces Retirement

After six years with 4 tournament titles and 18 top-three finishes in 27 tournaments, Hovancsek retires

ROCKLIN, Calif. - After six years with the Warriors and the best national run in program history, Men's golf coach emeritus Tim Hovancsek announces retirement.

"Coach H has been such an instrumental piece to our athletics department over the years as we've built up all our programs, it is going to have a different feel without him around every day," athletic director Lance Von Vogt commented. "But he's earned this retirement and I couldn't be happier for him."

Since 2012 Hovancsek has led the Warriors to four tournament titles and in those 27 tournaments had 18 top-3 finishes against many ranked opponents and tough competition. He held the highest national rankings in Jessup history in 2016-17 with the No. 9 slot and the programs first-ever trip to nationals where the Warriors finished in the top-10 on the national stage and senior Johnny Greco finished 14th in the country.

Greco, coached by Hovancsek all three seasons, had 7 individual tournament titles to his name and was awarded NAIA All-American in his final season for the Warriors in the nationals run.

"Under Tim's leadership, our Jessup golf program has become nationally relevant and is primed to become a national power," said Von Vogt.

Beyond his program accomplishments, Coach Hovancsek has helped in the success of the Jessup Athletics annual Warrior Golf Classic fundraiser and launch of our new annual Top Swing event that will be in its third year this Spring. His heart to serve Jessup Athletics does not go unnoticed in his continued support overall sports teams and event involvement.

"One of Tim's unique qualities was to point through his own miracle story as well as the bible his team towards God's goodness, grace, and mercy. At a Christ-centered school like Jessup, this quality is critical especially as we were setting this foundation of culture for future student-athletes. Tim has done that and it is only fitting that one of his former student-athletes in Matt Robinson has taken over the reins of the program earlier this year.  What better way to honor Tim and his work then to have one of his former student-athletes continue the legacy that he began."

As the seasoned veteran plant's roots in his new home of Arizona, he will remain a part of the Warrior family continuing to assist at our annual golf events, as well as the 2019 GSAC Men's Golf Tournament that will be played on our home course of Catta Verdera in Lincoln this Spring.
