Warriors Finish Mid-Pack to Open Spring Schedule

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Starting the spring season right where they left off, the men's golf team traveled to Arizona for the annual ACU Spring Invitational where they competed against some of the top teams in the country and conference finishing 8th overall out of a total 14 teams.

On Monday the Warriors shot an impressive 294 out the gate for the fourth position and added a few strokes in the second round of the day coming in at 302 for a total 596 after the first day on the greens good enough for the fifth spot tied with ACU and Hope International.

Leading the way for Jessup was Hunter Newlin who finished the first two rounds tied for fifth with a 73-70 on the day. He would continue to set the pace for the Warriors with a final round 73, finishing tied 11th overall out of a field of 83 golfers.

"Hunter showed all his hard work over the summer has added length and consistency to his game producing one of best tournaments to date with T11, +2, 73-70-75: 218," said head coach Tim Hovancsek.

Also contributing to the Warriors strong start was Custodio who hit a -1 par in the opening round coupled with Csanyi's solid 74 and Salamone's 76.

In the final round on Tuesday Jessup was paired with Victoria BC and Morningside College. With a 302 finish, coach was impressed with the quality of the shots made while showing progress in birdie totals, rather than the number on the scoresheet.

Custodio would hit a low in the third round at 73 followed by Newlin (75), Salamone (76) and Csanyi (78).

"While my expectations for our young squad are set pretty high, I feel we have the talent to go low," Hovancsek commented. "Our nucleolus of top 4, Hunter Newlin, Oliver Csanyi, Dominic Salamone and Jacob Custodio have the talent to get us a return appearance to Nationals later in May at TPC Deere Run."
