Warriors Battle Back in Final Round Comeback

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The Warrior's men's golf team continued their Spring season quest at the TMU Spring Invitational this Monday and Tuesday where they bounced back with a final-round low (322, 316, 300) to solidify the eighth position in the tournament.

Head coach Tim Hovancsek spoke of the rough conditions but proud of his teams for bouncing back in the final round, "Two days of frost delays and Tuesday started with snow-capped mountains and temperature in the low 30's, but I am proud of the guys with the way we fought and improved each round."

The Warriors were off to a rough start the first day of competition that was scheduled to hold two rounds of play, but a postponed second round due to darkness would have the Warriors coming back day Tuesday to finish up the second round.

Leading out the gate was freshman Zach Gardner who shot the team low 77 in the first round followed by Newlin just one stroke behind (78).

With each round, Jessup would improve as freshman Tyus Goring hit an even par in the final round, a 15-stroke difference from his first round score. Goring was joined by teammates Hunter Newlin and Oliver Csanyi in the final round with an impressive 75, and rounding out the foursome was Jacob Custodio battling back with a 78 to close.

Showing much grit and grind in the final round, the Warriors would finish 8th out of the 10 teams competing, but managed to cut 22 strokes from their first-round score and 16 strokes from their second round score.

Hunter Newlin would come out on top overall amongst the Warriors finishing in the top 25 of the individual race with a final 227 (78, 74, 75).

The Warriors will continue their spring schedule at The Battle at Primm in Nipton, Nev. March 19th through March 21st.
