Desert Winds Not Enough to Stop Warriors

Jessup golf finished in the top 5 led by freshman Jacob Custodio

INDIO, Calif. - Despite the unexpected desert weather conditions, the Warriors powered through this past week at the Desert Collegiate Invitational in Palm Springs hosted by Corban University finishing tied for fourth overall in a field of twenty teams in their final tournament before the GSAC Championship next month.

Leading the force in the opening round for the Warriors was freshman Jacob Custodio who was in the top 12 overall, continuing his stride through the two days of play to finish in the same spot.

Head coach Tim Hovancsek was pleased with his continued improvements, "I was really pleased to see all the work Jacob has been putting in is starting to pay off with a solid performance at Primm and his best finish to date in 12th place at The Golf Club at Terra Lago."

After the first day of play on the greens and two rounds, the Warriors were tied for fourth overall with a 318 round to start and 317 to close. With an average wind speed between 25-30, the Warriors were tested but able to stay consistent shooting one under their previous round.

"To be honest, mother nature won the event as the 25-30 mile swirling winds played with putting the ball in play," Hovancsek said. "I can honestly say, in 50 plus years experience playing this great game, these conditions were the most difficult I have ever witnessed."

The final day of play tested the Warriors but they maintained their top five finish with a 335 final round score led by freshman Tyus Goring's low 82 finishing tied for fourth with Marymount College.

Elk Grove native Custodio and Goring led the Warriors with 76-77-84-237 (12th), 82-76-82-240 (T19th) followed by Hunter Newlin 78-83-84-245 (T36th), and Oliver Csanyi and Dominic Salomone fought hard to finish in the middle of the field.

The Warriors will take the next month to prepare for the GSAC Championship on April 30-May 1st.
