Men's golf finishes season in playoff round

Warriors battled down the stretch for the national bid, but come up one stroke short

LINCOLN, Calif. -- In what turned out to be a very competitive three days of golf, the GSAC conference tournament on the men's side required a playoff to see who would qualify for the national bid being held in Mesa, Ariz.
While GSAC conditional member Ottawa University had a dominant 54 holes as they ran away with the top three individual scores, and won the team title by 35 strokes, both William Jessup and Arizona Christian found themselves locked in a tie for second.
After Ottawa ran away with the lead on day two, second place became the all-important position because Ottawa is not eligible to qualify for the NAIA national tournament after just joining in 2018.
For ACU and WJU their opening two days were polar opposites as ACU was just a stroke behind the lead while the Warriors got off to a slow start falling behind by seven.
However, on day two Jessup stormed back with their best day of the tournament shooting a 305 as a team and held on to tie things up at 941(+77) forcing a final playoff for the chance at a national tournament appearance.
The 10th hole was selected as the final hole to be played on the day and the Warriors came up just one stroke short as ACU earned the GSAC's national bid.
For Jessup Hunter Newlin had a tremendous tournament leading the Warriors shooting a final score of 231(+15) on the par 72 course at Catta Verdera. For his efforts Newlin earned all-tournament honors finishing tied for fifth overall.
Newlin came into the tournament tied for 10th on the conference season. Dominic Salomone had the Warriors second-best score finishing with a 236(+20) largely thanks to a solid day two, and both Jacob Custodio and Oliver Csanyi finished just behind Salomone tied for 15 overall as they both shot 237(+21).
