SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The 2022 GSAC Women's Basketball Tournament gets underway this week from the campus of The Master's University in Santa Clarita. The Warriors enter the postseason as the six seed and are set to take on Hope International tomorrow afternoon.
Jessup's quarterfinal matchup is scheduled for 2:15 p.m., as they will take on a Royals squad that earned the three seed in this year's tournament.
The Warriors wrapped up the regular season with an overall record of 14-16 and a .500 mark of 9-9 within the GSAC. In two meetings with the Royals, Jessup went 0-2.
Hope International visited Horton Court on December 5 as the Warriors fell 64-56. Jessup started hot in this one, outscoring HIU 33-24 in the first half before HIU stormed back to take the lead with a 25-point third quarter.
Cheyenne Jankulovski and
Kayla Vieira led the Warriors in this December meeting with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Warriors shot just 28.6-percent from the floor in the second half as HIU picked up the comeback victory.
The second meeting between these two squads saw the Royals win on their home floor, 60-44, on January 20. After trailing by ten at the half, Jessup climbed back to within four in the third quarter but could not finish off the comeback as they were held to just six points in the fourth.
Jankulovski scored 16 in this one, her second-highest scoring mark of the season. She was the only Jessup player to score in double-figures on this night.
The Warriors are led on the offensive end by Jankulovski (8.9 PPG) and
JoeLyn Stirton (8.8 PPG). The two are in their senior campaigns and are looking to continue playing and reach the NAIA Opening Round for the second season in a row.
Hope International is led by four players who have all appeared in 27 games and are averaging double-digits each time they step on the court. Ana Resendiz (14.2 PPG), Shiane Talley (12.7 PPG), Jeanette Fine (11.6 PPG), and Rhianne Omori (10.7 PPG) have led the scoring for the Royals.
The Royals come into Thursday with a record of 25-4 and 14-4 within the GSAC.
At 74.1 PPG, the Royals possess the third-best scoring attack in the conference. Jessup is scoring just 59 PPG, the eighth-best in the GSAC.
The winner of Thursday's game will advance to the GSAC Semifinals, where they will take on either The Master's, Vanguard, or Life Pacific. The official opponent will be determined in game six of the tournament, Thursday night at 7:15 p.m.
