ROCKLIN, Calif. – For the fans who filled the bleachers of Warrior Arena on Saturday night, what was in store was something never done by the Warriors. In a rout of the visiting Pacific Union Pioneers, Jessup won 100-34, setting the new single-game scoring record for the program.
"That was so much fun. I'm so glad we were able to hit 100 points at the end," said senior
Makaila Napoleon, who joined the Voice of the Warriors Dave Rosenthal postgame.
The win comes in dominating fashion as five Warriors scored in double-figures:
Andrea Jovicevic (17),
Andheya Aurelio (17), Napoleon (14),
Kayla Vieira (13), and
Janea Arnoldi (10).
It was Arnoldi who knocked down the record-breaking basket, a mid-range jumper that put the Warriors ahead 98-28 with 2:17. The old record of 96 points was set in 2017 against the same opponent, Pacific Union.
Napoleon offered some praise for her teammate, Arnoldi, adding, "That was awesome. She came in and dominated. I'm so proud of her."
Arnoldi added a team-leading six rebounds in her 12 minutes off the bench. Napoleon added more to her stat line as she tacked on three boards and a pair of steals.
The Jessup defense was frustrating the Pioneers all night, forcing PUC to commit 30 turnovers, resulting in 38 Jessup points off turnovers. The Warriors also racked up 14 offensive rebounds that were turned into 15 second-chance points.
Jessup shot 58.8 percent from the floor on Saturday, connecting on 40-of-68 from the field.
It was a team effort on Saturday as head coach
Corey Laster gave minutes to 15 players. All 15 totaled at least 11 minutes of game time. Napoleon would add, "I'm so glad that everybody was able to go in and contribute, and it's really exciting stuff, and I think that just proves that we're gonna be pretty good this season."
Jessup improves to 3-0 with the victory. Two of those wins came on Horton Court, with the third recently coming via a forfeit from Antelope Valley. News of that was made official by the NAIA office on Friday afternoon.
The Warriors will be back on the floor on Tuesday when they hit the road for the first time this season as they are scheduled to visit UC Merced. This will be part of a three-game trip away from Rocklin, as the Warriors will then visit Washington for the Cascade Challenge.
Jessup will be back on Horton Court on December 2 when they host Lincoln. Tickets are on sale
