LIVERMORE, Calif. – Jessup got back on the course Monday as they opened up the NMU Nighthawks Invitational. Taking place at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, the Warriors started the day off strong, but entering the evening, they find themselves looking up at the leaderboard.
Freshman
Matthew Shimizu posted the low score on the team, a five-over round of 77. Shimizu got off to a fast start, making the turn at two over before posting a birdie on ten. Shimizu sat one shot off the lead at that point, but through 18 holes, he sits in a tie for 25th.
Jessup sent five golfers to compete. Others in the field include
Arturo Zavala (T36),
Daniel Johnson (T61),
Rex Rollins (T65), and
Sean Collins (67).
Edvin Backstrom of Holy Names leads the field after posting a one-under round of 71. He leads Josh Morris and Christian Schrodt of Dominican by one stroke. Dominican holds a five-stroke lead over Cal State East Bay for the team title.
The final round of the Nighthawks Invitational gets underway tomorrow morning, as golfers will play 18 more holes to wrap up competition. Jessup will be in the first groups to go on the course, with tee times starting as early as 8 a.m.
Jessup returns to the course on March 27, when they take part in the TMU Spring Invitational.
