CLOVIS, Calif. – It was a busy week for Jessup's track teams as the Warriors split up to compete at two meets across California. Highlighting the week was the performance of distance runner
Azalea Prince, who punched her ticket to nationals for the second time this year.
Head coach
Jeff Magley, checking in from the West Coast Relays in Clovis, noted, "It was a very solid weekend for us. We had some great things. Finally, some decent weather and really great conditions for us. It's a great facility that they also use to host the CIF State Meet."
"We definitely had our work cut out for us from a competition standpoint. To see that in the results from this week, it's always good for us to get into that type of competition, and I thought our kids responded well to the competition. We had some really good performances."
In her junior year, Prince will be making her fourth career trip to an NAIA National Championship. The distance runner qualified in cross country during the fall of 2021, followed up with a trip to outdoor nationals the following spring. Earlier this season, Prince competed at the indoor national championship in the women's 5K.
With a time of 37:48.05 at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in San Francisco, Prince qualified in the 10,000M for the second season in a row.
"Coming off her indoor qualification, to qualify for the indoor and outdoor (national championship) in the same year is an awesome accomplishment," added Magley on Prince.
But that was not the only appearance of Prince this week. She also posted a time of 18:56.50 in the 5,000M at the West Coast Relays.
Other highlights occurred around the track, including the performance of
Jessica Pedretti in the discus. With a mark of 41.31m, Pedretti continues to lead the GSAC in that event. Pedretti is chasing a repeat trip to nationals as well.
New PRs were set in the pole vault, starting on the men's side, with
Alexander Travis posting a top mark of 4.30m. He also set a new PR in the shot put, posting 10.09m.
Jayden Jackson set a PR in the pole vault with a mark of 3.18m, moving her to second all-time in the program record book.
Distance runners
Hailey Hopkins and
Lacy Ceremony set new PRs in the women's 1500m. On the men's side,
Xavier Morales and
Jonathan Conklin set new PRs in the 5000M.
Erica Waseq posted a PR in the 100m hurdles, moving her to third in program history.
The Warriors now have two athletes with a ticket secured to nationals in Indiana, as
Kamil Jones punched his ticket last week. The Warriors will look to secure more berths next week in Turlock.
Jessup will compete in the Stanislaus State Multis on Thursday and Friday, followed by the Stanislaus State invitational Friday through Saturday.
