SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The outdoor season continued this weekend as the Warriors made their second trip to San Francisco, this time for the Johnny Mathis Invitational. Another weekend of PRs is in the books, but it was the team performance by Jessup that stole the show.
"It was a good day overall for our program," said head coach
Jeff Magley after the meet. "It was great to have nice weather again for the second week in a row. That really helps from a performance standpoint, so that was great."
The highlight of the day came in the team scoring column, as out of 17 competing teams, the Jessup women took first place. Jessup's 90 points finished tied with Hartnell for tops on the leaderboard. The first-place finish is the first for the Warriors since clinching the 2021 GSAC Championship.
"That was an awesome highlight for us to take the team title here," added Magley. "There were quite a few teams here, and so to come out on top, that was great."
The Jessup men placed sixth in their competition as the two-day meet saw several PRs by the Warriors.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Jessup's two runners set new PRs as
Travis Brown (10:46.95) and
Zachary Heberlein (10:49.30) bested their lifetime marks. Another PR was set in a distance event by
Jonathan Conklin as he surpassed 17:00 for the first time in the 5,000m, posting a time of 16:40.89.
Magley spoke about the steeplechase and his two freshman runners competing in the event. "That's a unique event because it's not done at the high school level. And so for freshmen who are running in that event, there's a long learning curve there with a strategy and technique to that race."
Brown and Heberlein move into the top 10 in Jessup history in the steeplechase with their times.
Hailey Hopkins added to the distance PRs by running the 800m in 2:37.77.
Two-sport athlete Jennifer Pedretti, who joins her sister Jessica on the track team, posted a big weekend as she set new PRs in the 100m (13.34) and long jump (4.53m). This comes a week after she set a PR in the 400m. Pedretti also competes on the women's basketball team, where she wrapped up her final season earlier this year.
Karsyn Leikauf returned to action after missing the last month due to injury, and in her return, Leikauf set two new PRs. Leikauf posted a new best in the 100m hurdles (17.93) and long jump (4.30m).
The Warriors are nearing the end of their season as the GSAC Championship will take place later this month. Earning a chance to compete in that meet was
Jeremiah Price as he set a new mark in the high jump to qualify him for the competition.
The GSAC Championship will take place April 27 – 28 from Thorrington Field in Santa Barbara. Before that, Jessup will take part in the 49er Last Chance next weekend in Marysville.
