ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – An early season road trip for the Warriors was on the docket Thursday as Jessup visited Sonoma State for a Division II matchup. In a low-scoring affair, the Warriors picked up their first win of the season as they topped the hosting Seawolves 56-46.
Jessup, led in their fourth season by coach
Corey Laster, are now 1-2 in their inaugural Division II campaign. The Warriors opened the season with consecutive losses against Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Fairbanks.
The scoring efforts were paced by guard
Natalie Moulos, who dropped a season-high 15 points on 5-of-9 from the floor. Seven of Moulos' points came in the closing stretches, as she put up nearly half of her points in the final 1:23 of regulation. Her late run began with her third triple of the night, pushing Jessup's lead to nine, and was continued by a layup and a two-for-two trip to the line.
Andrea Jovicevic finished behind Moulos with nine points, adding a team-leading eight rebounds and three assists. Brianna Byrned added seven points and four boards in her 29 minutes of action.
Jessup jumped out to a quick lead out of the gate, taking a 15-9 advantage into the second quarter. At halftime, the Warriors' advantage was trimmed to four, but the Warriors responded in the third to pad the lead up to eight points. Jessup had their best offensive output come in the final period when they posted 21 points.
The Warriors shot 36 percent from the field in Thursday's victory, compared to a 24 percent showing from Sonoma. Jessup connected on 6-of-18 from distance, as Byrnes,
Hailey Hoff, and
Laia Pala all added a three on top of the trio knocked down by Moulos.
Sonoma State was led by three players in double-figures. Alysa Lopez led the way with 12 points on 4-of-11 from the field, while Jayme Blackard matched her scoring with a 4-for-9 shooting performance. Madisyn Clark added 11 points. The other ten players to see game time combined for just 11 points in the loss.
The Seawolves are now 1-2 with the loss.
Jessup will get one day off before returning to the court as the season swings back to Rocklin for a meeting with Chico State. That matchup will tipoff at 2 p.m. and will be followed by the final two games of the 18th annual Bill Holtz Warrior Classic.
