ROCKLIN, Calif. - The long-awaited NCAA DII conference season opened in front of a home crowd on Horton Court in a Saturday matinee. Jessup defeated Westmont in a 52-51 thriller marking their first victory against the Warriors of Westmont.
Head coach
Corey Laster added positive comments on the day, "It was a great team win. I was super happy about our defensive efforts to secure our first win against Westmont."
Westmont finished the first quarter of the game ahead of the Warriors of Jessup 16-14. The tight game would continue into the second quarter with Westmont leading Jessup 31-30 to finish the first 20 minutes of play.
Defense and offense was competitive on both Warrior teams to keep the score at one after three quarters of play in favor of Westmont. Extra points in free throws proved evident in today's contest.
Andrea Jovicevic was perfect from the free throw line which would ultimately put the Warriors of Jessup on top and keep them there.
With just a minute left of play, strong defense from Jessup helped them keep their one point lead and stent their first victory in PacWest play.
Coach Laster continued, "We did just enough on offense to give us a chance to win. Bri (
Brianna Byrnes) and Andi (
Andheya Aurelio) set the tone defensively while Andrea set the tone offensively. It was a great group effort to come out with a conference win."
The Warriors will be back on home court on December 11th against California Maritime Academy at 5:30 pm.
