Prince Punches Sixth Career Ticket to Nationals

Azalea Prince hit the B-Standard in the 5000 M; The NAIA Indoor National Championships begin on February 29 in South Dakota

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – With one final chance to qualify for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship, the Warriors visited Santa Barbara on Saturday as they competed in Westmont's Sunshine Open. One Warrior took advantage of the opportunity, as a second ticket to nationals was punched on Saturday.

"Overall, it was a very good meet," said head coach Jeff Magley. "The weather was great, and we had good competition. We got to see three of our conference schools with Vanguard, Hope International, and the Master's here."

"It's always good to see conference competition, as well as some Division I and our future PacWest colleagues with Fresno Pacific."

Senior Azalea Prince, who already went to nationals in the fall during the cross country season, secured another trip as she hit the B-Standard in the women's 5000 M. This will be Prince's second trip to indoor nationals and sixth total across track and cross country.

Prince did so by hitting 18:06 in her race, placing her third in the field. The time was a new PR for Prince, who went to nationals in the same event a year ago.

Another highlight performance out of the Warriors came from freshman Julia Pisenti. Pisent set a new Jessup record in the shot put as she took first in the event with a mark of 13.17m. It's a new lifetime PR for Pisente, who also competed in the long jump, triple jump, and weight throw on Saturday.

Jessica Pedretti took third in the shot put as her mark of 12.48m finishes as the second-best mark in indoor track history, behind Pisente's throw.

On the men's side, a pair of unofficial indoor records were broken on Saturday. Jessup only sponsors indoor track on the women's side.

Zachary Heberlein broke a Jessup record with his time of 4:49 in the mile. Freshman Gianni Miles also etched his name into the record books with his time of 6.91 in the 60 M.

For Prince, who joins Erica Waseq as those qualified for nationals, that trip will come at the end of the month as the national championship starts on February 29. The NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship takes place in Brookings, South Dakota.
