DAVIS, Calif. – The outdoor season is in full swing, as the Warriors returned to action this weekend at the Aggie Open in Davis. With several PRs to highlight the weekend, the top moment came in the discus as two Warriors secured their trip to Nationals in Indiana.
Securing their spot in Indiana this May are
Julia Pisenti and
Jessica Pedretti, as both hit the A-Standard in the women's discus. It will be Pedretti's third trip to an NAIA National Championship, while Pisenti makes her first.
Pisenti actually hit the A-Standard in five of her six throws, with her top mark of 45.37m setting the new Jessup record for outdoor discus. Pedretti hit the B-Standard with four of her throws, but it was her mark of 44.79m that secured an automatic trip to nationals by hitting the A-Standard.
Head coach
Jeff Magley spoke on their performance, noting, "Having automatic qualifiers for both of those ladies this early in the season as teammates, I'm just really proud of them. That's an awesome accomplishment."
Pisenti then went on to break the Jessup record in the outdoor shot put, followed by a PR in the hammer and javelin.
Over to the track,
Eleanor Kania had a big day as she posted PRs in both the 100m and triple jump. "That's going to be a big event for her this year," said Magley on Kania's triple jump performance. "We're going to need her in that event, so for her to get going in that event today was nice."
The relays saw the Jessup 4x100m relay team on both the men's and women's side post times in the top 10 in program history.
The men's side also saw PRs from
Justin Heckman in the hammer and
Devon Hammeke in the 400m.
On his thoughts on the meet, Magley added, "It was a good overall meet for us. Definetly wasn't perfect, but it was a good meet. It was great to have some high-level Division I competition there with Fresno State, Sacramento State, and UC Davis. Those are three of the big Division I schools in our neck of the woods, so it's great to have that high level of competition for our kids to compete against."
The Warriors will return to action next weekend when they visit Sacramento State for the Hornet Invitational.
