SURPRISE, Ariz. – A new year for Jessup Golf got underway on Monday as the Warriors took a trip south to Surprise, Arizona. Taking part in the OUAZ Fall Invite, Jessup was able to put some low numbers on the board before play pressed paused due to inclement weather.
The 2022 OUAZ Fall Invite takes place at Sterling Grove Golf and Country Club in Surprise. The par 72 course sits 7,004 yards long from the men's tees and 5,823 for the women.
For the Jessup men, the best round of the day came from newcomer
Matthew Shimizu. Shimizu totaled four birdies in his opening round as he posted a score of one-over 73. His second round ended ten holes in, where he was +4 at the time.
Also posting scores near par was
Sean Collins, who currently sits in a tie for 11th at +2 for the tournament. Collins' opening round of 74 included a stretch of four birdies in eight holes as he played the back nine three under par. Collins is one even par through ten holes in round two.
"Today was a shotgun start," said head coach
Isaac Sanchez. "So (Collins) was three-under through his first eight holes, because he started on nine. So, through nine holes, in a really competitive field, he was either tied for the lead or right there near the top."
The Jessup men also have
Juan Crespo (+10, T37),
Ethan Leveque (+11, T41), and
Rex Rollins (+16, 46) in the field.
"Very pleased with both men's and women's teams," added Sanchez. "The men's team shot 305 this morning, so, you know, we're going in the right direction. This is a really competitive field, and we shot 31 shots better than we did in our opening round here last year. Definitely going in the right direction on the men's side, and the women's team did great as well."
For the Jessup women's team, the day's low round came from
Jessica Burdick, who posted 76 (+4) to start her day. Burdick made par on all nine holes on the back nine. Her second-round sees her currently +7 through ten, putting her in 19th place in the field.
Also in the women's field are
Corina Shaw (+17, T27),
Alyvia Mackey (+18, T29),
Macy Anderson (+38, 43), and
Ayasha Phillips (+43, 46).
On the performance of the Jessup women, Sanchez noted, "There were some nerves. Three players making their first college tournament, and we counted all three of their scores in the morning round."
Play was stopped in the second round due to strong winds and light rain. Golfers will look to complete their second round tomorrow before heading back on the course for another 18 holes.
Jessup's men are currently in seventh place in the ten-team field. OUAZ's B-team leads their A-team by a stroke. The Jessup women sit sixth in a seven-team field. Milligan University leads by four strokes over OUAZ.
