CARMEL, Calif. – For the first time under head coach
Isaac Sanchez, the Warriors are bringing home a team title. Entering day two of the Pacific Coast Highway Invitational with the lead, the Jessup men hung on through round two, earning the win in their third tournament of the season.
Sanchez expressed his joy after the round, stating, "Overall, just super blessed. This is such a good group. The men's and women's sides have been trying really hard, and we're just super grateful for the opportunity. I'm super happy for the players."
"To win a tournament with several conference teams that are in the event, one of our conference opponents' home tournaments, from where we were a year ago at this time, I'm just over the moon," expressed Sanchez. "To bring this trophy home and add it to the collection inside Warrior Arena for the first time since I got here is pretty exciting."
The Warriors came into Tuesday with a six-shot lead, posting an opening round of 301. On Tuesday, the scores were higher, mostly due to the weather, with Jessup posting 317. Their total score of 628 gave them a ten-stroke advantage over the host school, Menlo College.
Sanchez spoke about the weather, noting, "We shot higher today, but that's not really a representation of where we're at just because of the conditions. Everybody shot much higher today."
Matthew Shimizu led the Jessup men, posting a final-round score of 77 (+6). Shimizu finished in a tie with Westmont College's Andy Knight. The two returned to hole nine for a playoff. Shimizu made par, but Knight made birdie, giving Knight the individual championship.
"That was a tough one for Matthew," added Sanchez. "But he played great. Shot too many bogeys today, and Andy Knight from Westmont shot a great round to catch him."
In the women's field, it was
Jessica Burdick once again leading the way. Burdick took sixth, posting a final round of 86 (+15).
Corina Shaw (T18, +21),
Alyvia Mackey (T29, +52),
Macy Anderson (T29, +52), and
Irene Logan (31, +92) were also in the field for the Warriors.
"She had a rough day today," said Sanchez on Burdick's performance. "We'll probably see the rankings after this tournament, and she'll probably be one of the highest-ranking players in the GSAC. She'll get better from this."
Others in the men's field for Jessup's victory included
Sean Collins (T5, +11),
Ethan Leveque (10, +14),
Juan Crespo (T12, +17),
Rex Rollins (T28, +20), and
Arturo Zavala (T30, +25).
The Warriors now get to be the hosting school next week as they welcome golfers to Whitney Oaks on Monday and Tuesday. On carrying the momentum to his home course, Sanchez added, "I'm super excited. Everybody's working really hard and supporting one another. They're just getting better and better. The scores are going down."
