Track Readies for Next Week’s GSAC Championship at the 49er Last Chance

The Warriors competed in their final meet before next week’s conference championship in Santa Barbara

MARYSVILLE, Calif. – The final preparations before the GSAC Championship got underway on Saturday as the Warriors took to Marysville for Yuba College's last chance meet. The day was highlighted with several first-place finishes as Jessup aims to continue that trend one week from now in Santa Barbara.

"We had a good day, a very productive day," said head coach Jeff Magley. "This meet is always a little different for us because it is less than a week before our conference championship. So the whole point of this meet is about getting competitive ready and fine-tuning."

Magley also added that several Warriors had a lower workload than usual on Saturday to ensure they are in prime physical conditioning for next week.

Kamil Jones, one of three Warriors to already secure a trip to nationals, took first in the men's 200m as he posted a time of 22.42.

Jessup's men's team, who took sixth in the competition, saw another individual victory as Alexander Travis took first in the pole vault, posting a best mark of 4.15m.

The women's competition saw a first-place victory out of Jennifer Pedretti in the 400m as the senior ran a time of 1:01.94. The time moves her into the top seven in program history. Pedretti also posted a PR in the long jump for the second week in a row, posting 4.67m.

Hailey Hopkins took first in the women's 800m, posting a time of 2:39.83. The Warriors also added a victory on the track from Erica Waseq as she posted a PR of 14.81 in the 100m hurdles.

Waseq's time moves her to second in program history and tops in the GSAC.

Alexis Jones, looking to punch her ticket to nationals once again, took first in the triple jump with a mark of 11.09m. Jones qualified for nationals in that event last season. Jessica Pedretti, who also qualified for nationals in 2022, won the discus with a mark of 41.28m

Next up is a meet many have had circled all season, the 2023 GSAC Championship. Jessup will be looking to walk away as conference champions, a feat they accomplished in the 2021 season. This will also be the penultimate opportunity for the Warriors to qualify for the NAIA National Championship.

The GSAC Championship, running next Thursday – Friday, is hosted by Westmont College in Santa Barbara.
